The Tranz Alpine Rail Journey is regarded as one of the top rail journeys in the world. You are transferred this morning from your hotel to join the train. Climbing into the mountains, Cave Stream Scenic Reserve sits among spectacular limestone outcrops, with views of the Craigieburn and Torlesse Ranges. A 400 yard long underground river passes directly below where you stand and you may see where it enters and exits the mountain. Ascend the mountains and pass the ski resorts, mirror-like lakes and to Arthur’s Pass Station. Enjoy a journey through the heart of the Southern Alps over viaducts and rivers passing through numerous tunnels, gorges and alpine plains with spectacular views of mountain peaks, rain forests and gorges. The train heads all theway through on the Southern Alps to Greymouth on the other side of the South Island, before returning to Christchurch.
