You are transferred this morning to the train station into join the Taieri Gorge Railway. Boarding your vintage train car for a trip through some of the most rugged scenery in New Zealand. During the course of your railway ride, the train will make two stops to allow for picturesque photographs. Pass through the Salisbury Tunnel, the longest tunnel on the line and over the Wingatui Viaduct, which today still stands as the largest wrought iron structure in New Zealand. For the next 17 miles you will have views of mountain scenery and the Taieri River.In the small village of Pukerangi, which means “Hills of Heaven” in Maori, you will reach the highest point of the trip at 750-feet above sea level.Leaving Pukerangi, return along the same route to the Dunedin Railway Station built 1906 with Royal Doulton tiles in the foyer and colorful stained-glass windows in the tower. Return transfers to and from the train and your hotel are included. |
